BA '49
I entered college in 1943, then I went into the Navy for two years. I came back and got my degree in 1948, although I went through college in the class of 1949. In the summer of 1948 I went to Europe under a program called 'The Marshall Plan in Action.' That program gave me the eight credits I needed to earn my degree. I then remained in Europe for two years, working and attending graduate school. It was a great experience. When I was ready for college I lived in a far corner of Brooklyn. I chose to go to the downtown campus of CCNY, on 23rd Street, because of the long subway ride to the uptown campus. That was my only reason I had for going downtown where I studied business administration but enrolled in all the social studies classes I could. I graduated and went off to Europe for a couple of years. The downtown campus was a good, friendly place. A good friend of mine who is still around - his name is Bernard Schwartz - is also a graduate of Baruch College. He became a very prominent businessman. I was interested in international relations. CCNY oriented me towards an international career, which is what I had always wanted.
