There was a shortage of special education teachers. My sister said, 'Since you majored in education, maybe you'll be interested in the program.' I went over to CCNY and got some information. I became interested in specializing in special education versus general ed. Going to CCNY gave me an opportunity to further my education. It was reasonable, and I didn't have to take out a student loan. When I finished my classes and graduated, there were no bills left behind, so it was really fantastic. What I liked the most was that I was able to apply what I learned at CCNY while I was working. Everything was relevant and new, and I was able to research. I was able to see if it worked for my students and everything along that line. I realized that I liked working with a small group of students versus a big classroom like in general ed.
