I chose to attend the City College of New York because it was a free institution. Dr. Kenneth Clark was my psychology professor; he was a powerful model for me. He was an extraordinary scholar who used his intellectual gifts and scholarship to pursue social justice. He was a powerful part of my experience at CCNY. The other thing that was powerful for me was that in my sociology class, I was required to do an internship in a community agency that would helped me in turn to the education. I decided to do an internship in a community center in the South Bronx, which was about five blocks from my house. I went there and I was assigned to work with a group of 11- to 12-year-old kids in an afterschool activity group. I was supervised by a professional social worker and I was asked if I have ever thought about social work as a career. I then decided to go to Boston University, and after two years of my master's, I ended up staying there and became a professional social worker.
