Egidio "Ed" M. Tonitto

BE '70

Faculty & Staff

My parents were in Italy, and I was here by myself. I tried to pull through with the help of my wife and my mother-in-law. I liked some of the professors. The way they were teaching was very enthusiastic. I liked learning any subject. At that time I was very much interested in the space program. I said, 'If I have to go to the Army, I'm going to be a pilot,' which was also a big dream of mine. I know that I was average compared to other people, but I never gave up, and I made it. I saw myself not being at the top, but I wasn't at the bottom either. I'm very proud even in my grades as well. When I graduated the dry market was bad. Being a graduate of CCNY, and my background in construction, helped things. I found a job with a construction company. My enthusiasm about the space program and science in general never faded away. I'm still interested in that today. I'm very thankful that I was accepted at CCNY and went through with it. It gave me the possibility of furthering my education. I'm forever grateful for that. It reflected also on my two daughters. One has a PhD and the other one is a teacher with several master's degrees.
