Student Life & Rich Traditions

I had grown up a block away from the campus, and I knew Convent Avenue very well. When we rode my tricycle, my mother and I would go and sit on the college walls. I had a very strong physical relationship with CCNY, and so when you said college to me, I thought of CCNY. There was always a sense that I was going to end up there. I loved the buildings and campus, and I was very happy to go there. I took an English major at CCNY, and I was in the honors program in English. I was a member of the Onyx Society, a Black students organization, and I was an upper-class advisor that helped with the freshmen. I was also active with the college radio station, WCCR, and Tech News, which was the newspaper of the Engineering Department. Since I also took six credits in journalism courses, I found my life's work in being a journalist. After graduating from CCNY I went to Harvard University and took the Radcliffe Publishing Course, a short graduate-level course.
