I was a resident of Washington Heights. I knew I was going to college, and one of the reasons my parents always stayed in New York and never thought about leaving was because I could go to school for free. This was at the time of the Vietnam War, and I was still there in the days when it was free. I also got a Regents Scholarship, which covered more than my books. I loved the City College of New York, and I had the best time there. I made really good friends, and it was a wonderful experience. There was a cafeteria in the South Campus where everybody hung out. What I value most was the experience that New York City gave me. I was most thankful for the opportunity to do it. I credit everything to the willingness of the residents and the leaders of New York City to provide that experience for its children.
