I met all the people at the City College of New York, and they were incredibly smart. They realized I was pretty smart, so they wound up hiring me as a person to actually set up the place. They used me in as a staff person for each of those big plays that went on in New York and went right on Broadway. That experience put me in a very good situation for getting myself on my own feet. I worked for them, and they paid me as well as providing me with the home. That situation, from that point on, was a takeoff from me at CCNY. I did very well there. What made me smile were the roles that I played, the smarts of those people, and their generosity to me. It was impossible to describe how useful that was for me growing up. I got some very good instructors there, and the experience living with those people who were the producers of the biggest plays on Broadway was just astonishing. I grew and grew from that.
