CCNY had a very good academic reputation and, coming from a low-income family, the fees were acceptable. I had several professors there whom I really respected, notably in history, social psychology, and Hebrew. My studies in political sociology were helpful in fashioning my future career. I was drafted into the Army before completing school, and afterward, I went back to school on the GI Bill. What I remember most about CCNY was developing camaraderie with a number of people. A highlight of my career was becoming the founding executive director of the National Conference on Soviet Jewry, a major organization in the human rights community and where I served for 18 years. I remained as chief executive officer of two other national agencies focusing on the Sephardi history and progressive Israel.
