BS '52
My parents were from Barbados. They came just about the beginning of the 1900s. They graduated from high school here in the United States, but I was the first generation of my family to graduate from college. I was in CCNY during the 1950s when the basketball team was really well known. They won the championship during that time. I remember Lewisohn Stadium. I played on the evening session girls' basketball team. That was really great. Basketball was a big thing with CCNY at that time. I'm African-American. There weren't too many African-American students when I went to City College in the 1950s, so most of us knew each other. It was a whole group that used to ride from the Bronx to go to CCNY. Then we would walk through the park together. Those were some good days. I also got my master's in education at CCNY in 1957. I became a classroom teacher. That's what I did for the rest of my life. I was a teacher until I retired. I retired three times. The first was in 1985. Then they asked me to come back to be a mentor. I retired again maybe in 1993. Then they asked me to work on special projects. I was a music person, so I used to do the graduation. I finally retired for the last time in 1997. I miss that life. Looking back I am most thankful for the free tuition.
