I went to CCNY as it was affordable. It was one of the better schools in the CUNY system because it was one of the major colleges. It was in Harlem. I really wanted to check out Harlem, and there was so much rich history there. I'm of African descent, but I was born and grew up here. I heard so much about Harlem. I thought it'd be so cool to go to school there. The campus was beautiful with the old architecture, so when I went to visit, I was really impressed. I liked the way it looked. The Sophie Davis Program was an excellent program on my way to becoming a doctor. I liked the diversity of the school and I felt comfortable with the student body, so that's what made me go there. Dean MacLeish was really, really an inspiration to me. She was helpful and understanding. She was West Indian, so it was like talking to my mom. She was so very dignified, and I admired her quiet strength. It was kind of cool seeing her there and knowing that she'd say supportive things. We weren't close or tight, but just seeing her there was comforting. What she would say to the students was helpful.
