Career Success

CCNY was a great school, and I had the luxury of getting a free education. My family couldn't afford to have me go to college, so it was absolutely wonderful. I had great teachers. I had a terrific professor for hydraulics and fluid mechanics, Professor Stevens. He was always willing to chat and spent a lot of time with me in the fluid mechanics laboratory. He wrote a recommendation for me that helped me obtain a fellowship in hydraulics at Northwestern University. After grad school, I worked in Chicago for a large civil engineering company for five years. I then moved to Portland, Oregon, working for another civil engineering firm. As I moved up the ladder as an engineer, I got more and more involved in negotiating contracts and with construction disputes with contractors. My clients would typically go to their city attorney for advice but the city attorneys often didn't know very much about construction law. I finally came to the conclusion that my clients were often receiving poor advice from their attorneys, but I didn't know what the correct advice was! I got interested in the legal aspects of things and ended up going to law school. I practiced law for 30 years and represented architects, engineers, and owners in matters involving construction disputes. CCNY provided me with a great background that I would never have been able to receive elsewhere. CCNY literally provided me with a foundation for the rest of my life. I will always be always thankful for CCNY.
