Arnold "Arnie" B. Gordon

1960

Moments in Time

I was there from February 1956 to February 1960, and I was second in command of the ROTC. I majored in government pre-law. My marks were better than average and I was a member of the Society of American Military Engineers chapter of the CCNY ROTC unit. Other than that I commuted from Bayside, Queens, studied, played 'Hearts' almost addictively, and enjoyed my little garden at home. Unless I had graduated from CCNY, I don't know how else my life could have developed for me to become an attorney, a senior executive in the federal government, and an Army Reserve Brigade Commander. I met my wife while I was at CCNY. She was a music and art girl, and we married in 1963. I remember several among the faculty who were especially helpful to me including Professor Hillman Bishop of the government department, Stanley Page, Stanley Feingold, Captain Niels Lund, and Dean Morton Gottschal. Because I had such a long commute, I would sleep occasionally on the concrete benches in old Lewisohn Stadium. Swimming at CCNY gave me a life long exercise regimen, and even at 82 I swim a kilometer every other day. As a poor NYC kid I had no choice but CCNY and I love the institution to this day.
