Career Success

It was affordable. I paid my way through and I worked full-time in downtown Manhattan. It was very easy to get to. I started out at Queens College, but the trip took me forever, so it is a lot easier for me to transfer it to CCNY as a history major and get my degree. I was struggling to get through it because I didn't have ambitions to be a professor and I was working full-time. The draft was after me in those years. I would frequently take a full load of credits and it was a nightmare juggling all that stuff. When I was working, one of the jobs I had was on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. I was very familiar with the brokerage industry, got into a company, and that was a great job. It led to a job in sales. I had a really good career selling phones and I went from a company in New York to a company in Texas. They recruited me and I did well with them. I became vice president of sales with that company. I became a senior vice president of sales with BellSouth Corporation. I attribute all of that to CCNY. I never could have gotten that first job without a college degree. The city university system is wonderful. It's possible to actually get a degree when you grow up.
