The CCNY Asian Alumni Group was established in 1981 to promote the networking among the growing population of Asian-American students and alumni. It was started with the active participation and encouragement of Sy Weisman, then Executive Vice-President of the CCNY Alumni Association, and of Harry Lustig, then Dean of Science, and later Provost.
It was quite an effort to go over the alumni database and ferret out the Asian last names for a mass mailing to all Asian alumni in the region. The very first Lunar New Year Dinner was held at the Peking Park Restaurant, with close to ten tables.
Since then, we have held every year an Annual Dinner & Dance to help welcome in the Lunar New Year. At these functions, we present Achievement Awards to outstanding honorees who have advanced the interests of Asian-Americans.
Past honorees include among many:
Peter Tom '70
First Asian American Civil Court Judge of the City of New York
Thomas Tam '68
First Asian American member of CUNY Board of Trustee
CCNY graduate, member of CUNY Board of Trustee
Kenneth Chu '74
Chief Administrative Judge
Doris Ling Cohan
Judge, New York State Supreme Court
President of Asian American for Equality
Matthew Goldstein '63
Chancellor of CUNY
Judith Chin '72E
Regional Superintendent of Schools
First Asian-American member of NY City Council
Margaret Chin '75
First Asian-American woman Councilor on NY City Council
We also present Scholarship Awards to outstanding Asian-American students with GPA > 3.5 who have a record of service to the community. The purpose and objective of the Asian Alumni Group is to advance the interest and welfare of the College, foster a spirit of fraternity/sorority and goodwill among Asian-American graduates, service the Asian alumni and offer financial, technical and networking support for today's Asian students at CCNY.
We have organized Educational & Financial Workshops to promote the networking among the Asian-American alumni in the region. Other activities have also included Movie / Theater outings to events highlighting the effort by Asian-American authors or playwrights.
We welcome participation by all Alumni Affiliates and Chapters to our functions.
