All the snow and below freezing temperatures
have not slowed down our progress!!
Message from CCNY President Lisa Staiano-Coico
 |
It's certainly a pleasure to be able to write to you briefly at the beginning of the Spring semester, although I am using the word "spring" more optimistically than descriptively – if you haven't had the chance in a while to see how beautiful our campus is in the snow, now's the time!
Rather than say a very little about a lot of the wonderful things going on at City College, I wanted to tell you about five remarkable students who recently won 2011 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships for study abroad during the spring semester. They were among 2,300 students chosen nationwide for this prestigious program sponsored by the Department of State to prepare tomorrow's international leaders.
Ayodele Oti, a Macaulay Honors College majoring in international environmental public health and sustainable development, will spend the spring semester in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. (Ayodele gets around; she spent the summer doing NSF-funded research in Iceland.) Jesse King, a senior pursuing a double major in English and international studies, is writing about the French ban on veils covering the face, including the burqa worn by Muslim women and the expulsion of the Roma – in Paris. Powell Fellow Gareth Rhodes, who interned at the White House last summer, spent January at the University of Shanghai studying Chinese business and Mandarin. Tabassum Rahman will spend this semester studying neuroscience in the United Kingdom.
Surely the most exciting semester so far, however, goes to Catherine Mandler, a senior majoring in international studies, who settled in for a semester in Egypt several weeks ago! She has been safely evacuated, and will go instead to Koc University in Turkey for the semester, and then the summer in Morocco.
We have such wonderful students, with many more stories of commitment and achievement. They are truly your heirs. |
Alumni In Residence Program
We all know that Chris Cimino, meteorologist for NBC4's "Today in New York", Linda Kaplan Thaler, advertising guru who created the advertising for the "Aflac Duck" and Eli Wallach, legendary actor who this year received a Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement are distinguished Alumni with lots of expertise.
We know that you as an Alumnus or Alumna of The City College also have unique and special expertise. We are looking for you to share your expertise with students at the college. Based on the current needs of specific courses at the college called 'Capstone' Senior seminars, Alumni will be invited to present a one time lecture.
Capstone seminars are intended to engage students in on examination of complex, contemporary, and inherently multidisciplinary issues using a distinctly psychological perspective. Such a perspective challenges students to consider the role of human motivation and cognitive processes in problem recognition, assessment and the forms of decision making that well educated people will be called upon to make throughout their adult lives.
If you are interested in helping today's senior students by participating in our "Alumni in Residence Program", please call the Alumni office at 212-234-3000 or email Don Jordan, Executive Vice President at djordan@ccnyalumni.org.

The CWE Alumni Group participated in the Annual Thanksgiving Mission Project at the Canaan Baptist Church, located in Harlem. Our Alumni were among the many volunteers who assembled, distributed, and delivered hundreds of Thanksgiving food bags to needy Harlem residents. The CWE Alumni Group was recognized for its support and volunteer-service by Mr. William Parker, Coordinator of the 2010 Project. A special thank you goes out to Group member Elizabeth Lucas, who not only created the opportunity for us to participate in this worthy project, but who also collected and donated turkeys on our behalf. On Christmas Day 2010 our CWE Alumni volunteers helped to serve over 150 dinners to homeless and needy Harlem residents at the St.Andrew's Episcopal Church. The Church's coordinators of the Christmas Day annual event were very appreciative of our help and support, as were the meal recipients.

Chris Cimino serves as the meteorologist for NBC4's morning show "Today in New York," and as the Saturday weather reporter for NBC's "The Today Show."
A native New Yorker, Cimino joined NBC4 as weekend meteorologist in December 1995. He came to the station from WTXF-TV in Philadelphia where he was the weekend weather anchor for the late news. Cimino was also the weekday weather anchor for the morning and noon newscasts on WLWT-TV, the NBC affiliate in Cincinnati, Ohio, and held similar positions with WNEP-TV, Pennsylvania, and WROC-TV, Rochester, New York.
Prior to that, Cimino was the senior broadcast meteorologist for the Metro Weather Service Inc., forecasting and broadcasting weather reports to more than 25 radio stations nationwide.
In 2000, Cimino was awarded the Townsend Harris Medal from the City College of New York for outstanding postgraduate achievement. He is Honorary Chair for the Mid-Jersey Chapter of the M.S. Cimino has served as media chairperson and works closely with the United Cerebral Palsy organization in Long Island hosting the "Festival of Trees." He was honored with the organization's "Humanitarian of the Year Award" in 2001.
A recipient of the prestigious American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval, Cimino received his Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from The City College of New York in 1983.
Cimino currently resides with his family in New Jersey.

Former Presidents of the Alumni Association, Joseph Fleischer Arch '65 (with wife, Carolyn '68E) and Pat Black '65E (with husband, Ronald) met with Alumnus Charles Gonzales, Arch '65 who has settled permanently in Puerto Rico and serves on the Executive Council of the AARP Puerto Rico. Charles was eager to hear Alumni news and to show the advances that PR is making in developing the economy. This picture shows the group visiting a microbrewery (and, no, they were not drinking all that beer!).
